Budget Army 1

This is the first in what I hope to be a series of articles. Not about tactics, but about building an army on a budget.

This came about as a bit of an accident, when I decided to do my Space Wolves list. My objective was to put together a good looking army that didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Veteran's Day

ThunderHOOF Cavalry

So I decided to do a Space Wolves army. I wasn't planning on it, but when I got the Codex, the Thunderwolf Cavalry called out to me - and who am I to deny?

I'll post more as I get stuff done, but here's the (extremely basic) conversions I've done so far. There's no Thunderwolf mount, excepting the inane Canis model - so I looked and looked and decided that I didn't have a viable option that wouldn't force me to take out a 2nd mortgage to run. After that, the decision came down to WHFB Chaos Knights' horses and rider legs or WHFB Dark Elf Cold Ones - and I'd get to find biker legs or do heavy leg modification to get it to work.

Immolator Spam

You've probably seen this before. I've posted this on Dakka and YTTH previously, but since this is my blog and the Immolator Spam was my brainchild, I thought I should bring it over here.

I took this army list to the 2008 Las Vegas GT and did quite well with it, going 4-0-1 with 82 Battle Points
(2 complete wins, 1 major win, 1 minor win and 1 "winning" tie 13-8). I could have done better, but the cost of the army prevented me from completing it until two weeks prior and I didn't get much practice in with it.

The Gathering Storm

I finished reading this book late last night. For those of you that don't know - first off, shame on you - this is the 12th book in The Wheel of Time Series (of 14). These are meaty books; each one in the 700-800 page rage. The series started out strong and grabbed my attention early (1990-ish), and I eagerly awaited the books as they were released each one to two years. Recently the author, Robert Jordan, started to have health problems: a rare blood disorder, and so releases came further and further apart. After book 11, A Knife of Dreams, was published, Jordan passed away.

For those of you that don't know me, my name is John Steele - I sometimes go by the handle stjohn70. If you haven't heard of me, then you're probably in the vast majority.

I've been playing Warhammer 40k since 1998 and tactical games for ten years more than that. My first 40k army was Blood Angels, and I quickly found the love that was 3rd Edition's Rhino Rush. I generally won more than I lost - but it took 4th Edition's vehicle punishing ways to make me take an army that made me think about what was happening on the tabletop.
